June 19: Sunset Sail Quilt Pattern Release

This Friday, on June 19, I will release my second quilt pattern. This quilt has a special place in my heart because I designed it in honor of my late father, Rodger Clarence Swanson. June 19 is my parent's wedding anniversary.

The Inspiration:

You can find out more about the details and inspiration in a special blogpost I wrote. It has been 2 years since we lost my Father. Throughout that time I have found comfort in doing some of the things that he loved, searching through his treasures, and creating patterns and art that have his memory threaded through every inch.

Each of us deals with grief in different ways, but these avenues have filled my time with joy over the last two years, and to be honest, they have also helped me to cry and to hold my sadness in the right way.

I loved every minute of creating this design and writing the pattern. My favorite point is always finding fabric that brings all of it to life and it was so fun to search for fabrics that reminded me of a sunset and of the sea. You can see my selection of fabrics for this first quilt, all made of Alison Glass or Speckled by Ruby Star:

Fabric Requirements:

I find it handy to have a simple list version of fabric requirements when I'm shopping for a quilt. There are 13 fabrics and it is helpful to have yardage cut before you begin with your piecing. Cutting instructions are included in a helpful chart in the pattern.

I got my fabric here: Warman Cozy Quilts in Barrington, IL

Quilting and the Pantograph

I handed this quilt over to Ligia of Dearly Quilted and requested a special pantograph designed by Barbie of The Quilting Mill for this quilt.

There is a sailboat featured in this quilt, and Ligia actually added a quilted line to separate the sails. I can't wait to show you the finished product!

For the backing, Ligia suggested that I use black minky and it was the perfect complement to the sunset on the front, giving the soft feel of night. I also gifted this quilt to my son and so I knew the minky would be a sweet addition for him.

June 19 release

I am going to be releasing this quilt on Friday and will send out a coupon for all of you to say thank you for your support and kindness. It will be applicable when using Etsy or my website shop. Stay tuned for the Friday email!

Until Friday, hug someone you love very tightly! <3 Kate
